NURAGIC SANCTUARY OF SANTA VITTORIA

Nestled in a habitat of considerable naturalistic interest, the Nuragic Sanctuary of Santa Vittoria di Serri is one of the most important cultic complexes in Nuragic Sardinia.
It is located on the western end of the Giara di Serri, in a position of wide geographical dominance between the historical regions of Marmilla and Sarcidano, in a total area of about 22 hectares.
Its discovery dates back to 1907-1909 when archaeologist Antonio Taramelli (1868-1939) assisted in the field by Filippo Nissardi and by Raffaele Pettazzoni, brought to light on the basaltic plateau a series of ancient structures that revealed intense frequentation during the Nuragic period with a continuity of use in the Punic, Roman and Byzantine ages.
After him, other archaeologists conducted excavations and studies on the shrine, and the investigations are still ongoing by the Soprintendenza Archeologia,
fine arts and landscape for the metropolitan city of Cagliari and the provinces of Oristano and South Sardinia.
